Resources For Families

Raising a child is a full-time job! The following web sites contain useful information that can help make the job a bit easier:

The Child, Youth and Family Health website of the Vancouver Island Health Authority is full of information and resources on Vancouver Island to help you through every stage of your child's health.

The UNICEF website details the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The UNCRC was ratified in 1989 and recognizes elements essential to the growth and development of the child including the right to education, the right to participation, and the right to protection.

The Canadian Abilities Foundation website provides information and resources for people with disabilities.

The Accesstown website provides accessibility information to persons with disabilities and their families about community events taking place in Greater Victoria.

The website for Child & Family Canada offers numerous resources related to children and families.

The Caring for Kids website, developed by the Canadian Pediatric Society, offers children's health information from Canada's pediatric experts.

The Public Health Agency of Canada website provides an excellent library of helpful articles on children's health.

The About Kids Health website, developed by The Hospital for Sick Kids in Toronto, provides families with reliable information on topics influencing child health and family quality of life.

The Kids Health website is a goldmine of health information provided in three categories. The kid's section has a variety of games and lots of information for younger children. The teens section can help your teen learn about health issues of concern to them and includes such topics as body image, acne and emotions. There's also a section for parents with lots of information on raising healthy kids.

The At Home program assists parents with the costs associated with caring for children with severe disabilities.

HealthLineBC offers information about nutrition and healthy living.

The Save the Children website is a great site for information on the work being done around the world to promote children's rights.

Ledger House
Pediatric Mental Health

The Queen Alexandra Foundation supports the Ledger House Mental Health program which provides mental health assessments for children and youth in our community who are desperately in need of this care. Ledger House's impacting work is best described in the words of a former program participant. She recently wrote:

"I had a multitude of problems: drugs, alcohol, depression, a past sexual assault, and an eating disorder. I was admitted to Ledger four times over a year and a half before I managed to sort through it all, but I will always consider myself lucky that I had the option of going there. I learned that Ledger is a safe place, where when you are ready; you can deal with whatever your problems are. With the help of these solid anchors, I was able to realize what I wanted to do with my life … become someone who helps those in need. Whether it will turn into social work, counseling or working with criminals, I am not sure, but I know now what steps to take."
