The Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children funds programs and services for young people on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. One of our biggest projects this year is the construction of Jeneece Place, a home away from home for children and youth who require medical services in Victoria. But, we also provide funding so that healthcare professionals can purchase medical equipment that will diagnose a hearing problem early on in a child's life so it can be treated. Or help them see, or regain skills after a head injury. Or help create artificial limbs that allow children to have an active lifestyle. Their needs are great and are listed below. This is just a sample of the many items children and youth on Vancouver Island desperately need today. If you'd like any more information on any of these pieces of equipment - or the many others not listed here - please contact Jennifer Jasechko at (250) 519-6990. Thank you!
Some of the items on our urgently needed 2009/2010 equipment list include: Portable Speech Therapy Kits (6) - $1,200 total - For use in the community and various therapy playgroups, these rolling suitcase kits are filled with books, toys, puzzles, worksheets and crafts and provide an important base for cognitive, language and social development for children who are challenges in these areas. Garfield's Typing Pal (18) - $32 each - This typing program provides motivating characters, multi-level typing exercises and a fun and amusing approach to learning how to type. This program is used with children who are unable to or have difficulty with handwriting. Height Right Chairs - (5) - $511 each - These chairs provide secure positioning and ergonomic growth adjustment to make the height and seat depth of the chair just right for children with mild to severe physical challenges. Having the support of these chairs is essential to encourage children to develop their finer motor skills. Hand Orthotic Package - $1,268 - A variety of trial sample hand and thumb splints for use with children to evaluate their effectiveness prior to recommendations to families. Providing adequate positioning and support to the fingers/thumb can have a dramatic impact on improving function and preventing further misalignment or loss of joint range. PsychCorp Psychology Testing Resources (1) - $1,200 - These testing and assessment materials are needed by the QA Neuropsychology and Psychology Programs to diagnose children's behavioural and mental health challenges so proper treatment plans can be put into place.
