On May 8, 2010 the QA Youth Advisory Council presented:
Rights Now! Educate. Advocate. Relate – a youth conference:

While most people lay fast asleep on the morning of May 8, 60 participants plus energized volunteers and speakers bustled about the UVic Student Union Building, getting ready for the Rights Now! youth conference. From screen-printing t-shirts to engaging workshops, the day was packed. Our first keynote speaker perfectly set the tone for the whole conference. Spencer West had the sort of presence which captured everyone's attention even before he spoke. His life story and the UNCRC were tied into an inspirational speech which got us all pumped, and ready to take a stand for what we believe in.
Most of the day was spent in workshops, each based upon an article out of the UNCRC . The sessions were fascinating and motivating, with a variety of workshop leaders such as 16 year old Jeneece Edroff, the Pride Community Center, and Gita John-Lyam. The Youth Advisory Council also had a role, and led solution-based pod sessions. A definite highlight of the day was a performance by slam poets Adler and Mcleod. Our last keynote speaker, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond provided a great close to the day with her speech about her experience with the justice system, and the importance of rights. Participants began the day a little sleepy and tentative but ended the day enthusiastic and ready to make a change. Although exhausting, Rights Now! was worthwhile and really did Educate, Advocate, and Relate our rights.
The YAC put in many hours, much enthusiasm and lots of work into creating a fabulous, engaging and educational experience for conference participants.
